MILL HEADERS (MILL ENDS) AND TRUNNIONS

Design Features

Mill Headers (Mill Ends) are parts that act as end covers to a tubular type ball mill or rod mill or sag mill. These are conical shaped from the one side that directly gets bolted onto the mill flange and cylindrical shape from the other through which the material inflow or discharge takes place. Mill headers are generally made from castings of various alloy and carbon steels or ductile iron or sometimes they are fabricated in case of light of medium weight designs. A mill header basically provides end support to the mill. They rotate on specially designed trunnion bearings as the cylindrical portion of the header slides on a self-lubricating white metal lining attached to the trunnion. The size of the mill headers depend upon the size of the mills. The bigger the diameter of the mill the larger is the bigger diameter of the cone. Mill headers (mill ends) are also lined with special wear resistant steels from the inside through bolts that rest on the conical portion. These are specially designs bolts that rest on the cone to hold the liners against the header cone. Mill Headers rest on trunnion bearings made of white metals or phosphorous bronze cast or lined over specially designed sockets. The design is such that the lining can be retrofitted or relined on the sockets for faster and more economical replacement.

Common Applications

Mill headers are mainly used for various types of grinding mills that are tubular (cylindrical) in shape. This including ball mills, rob mills, sag mills etc. Common applications including clinker grinding plants, (cement plants) fertilizer plants, mineral processing and grinding, ceramics and glass industry, coal grinding, ferrous and non-ferrous ore beneficiation, construction material processing such as gypsum, lime etc.

Material of Construction

ASHOKA offers mill headers in various materials of construction including cast alloy and carbon steels, cast irons and steel plate fabricated. International material standards are offered as per customer designs and requirements.

Some of the common material grades for mill headers are-
• Cast IS 2708 / 2644
• Cast BS 3100 BT1 / BT2 / AW6
• Cast Ductile and SG Irons
• Fabricated from MS IS 2002 / 2062, SA 516 Gr. 70 etc.
• Ph Bronze for mill bearings
• White Metals for mill bearing sockets

In addition to the above various other grade of castings are possible as per

Manufacturing Capacity

The following is the range of manufacturing and supply of mill headers (mill ends)-
• Suitable for mill diameters up to 6.0 m
• Upto 45 MT weight in single piece
• Bottom cone diameter of 6.0 m x 3.0 m height
Rollers are accurately machined on imported Vertical Turret Lathes (VTL) of makes including FRORIEP, DORRIES, SKODA etc. and shafts are machined using horizontal lathes. ASHOKA has facility to turn a maximum shaft length of 8.0 m up to 2.0 m diameter.
